University of Iowa Insect Zoo


Friday, we went to Keokuk to see the insect zoo at the library. Lil Red was into touching everything but Princess Brilliance was a little more reserved. We saw tarantulas, giant roaches, beetles, giant centipedes, walking sticks, scorpions, and more. Here are some pics! Did you know that scorpions glow under a black light?

That Says | A Homemade Phonics Game

Several years ago, I looked into buying “Hooked on Phonics”, but letting go of two hundred plus bucks was way more than I was comfortable with. I decided to come up with a game myself and by involving the kids in the creation of the game, they catch on just that much easier. Instructions for creating the game: Use a phonics website to find a list of letters and sounds. Start with the letters from your child’s name. This is a great way to get them interested. If your child has letters that combine to make another sound like th, or, eigh, go ahead and use them, but don’t separate them. Cut index cards in half, width-wise. Print “THAT SAYS” on one side of each card. On the other side put one of the letters at the top of two cards. Leave a space for a picture and put a word that starts with that sound at the bottom. Do you homeschool? If so you have the perfect opportunity to mix up those boring categories that traditional schools use to compartmentalize learning. Here are just a few ways to get some hands-on learning that mixes up the subjects. Feel free to count the time spent doing these activities as History, Language Arts or both! Stage a debate between George Washington and King George! (Or any two opposing historical figures.) Choose a historical event. Pretend you are a director who is casting the actors for a movie about it. Then choose people to play the characters. These can be anyone! – Friends, historical figures, actual actors, even fictional! Explain who you would choose and why. Make a comic book depicting an event you are studying. When studying historical conflicts such as the Civil War or the Civil Rights Movement, have your kids write letters to the editor written from the perspective of someone on each side.
